☀️ Savannah’s Summer Bridge Plan – Gentle 1st Grade Prep
A low-pressure, joyful 10-week plan for sensitive, deep-feeling kids
June through early August • 15–30 minutes most days • Built with mindfulness and emotional safety
🌿 Philosophy
This is not school. It’s summer magic that gently keeps curiosity alive, supports emotional regulation, and builds confidence for fall — all through nature, stories, art, and play.
🧘♀️ Mindfulness Moments (Use Daily)
- Ocean Breath – Breathe in like smelling the sea, out like blowing on a shell
- Heart Hug – Cross arms, squeeze gently, say something kind to yourself
- 5-4-3-2-1 Senses – Name 5 things you see, 4 you can touch, etc.
- Nature Stillness – Sit quietly outside for 1–3 minutes
- Color Monster Check-In – “What color are you feeling today?”
📅 10 Weekly Themes
Week 1: Ocean & Beach Wonders
- Collect shells/rocks and sort by size/color
- Read The Rainbow Fish or Commotion in the Ocean
- Draw or paint your favorite sea creature
- Mindfulness: Ocean Breath while holding a shell
- Nature walk: count birds or waves
Week 2: Sand & Dunes
- Build a mini dune in a tray with sand
- Experiment: what sinks/floats in water?
- Story: The Sandcastle or dune ecology book
- Mindfulness: Nature Stillness imagining you’re on a tall dune
- Sensory play: dry vs wet sand textures
Week 3: Wetlands & Swamp Explorers
- Make a simple food chain with drawn animals
- Read about frogs or cypress trees
- Boardwalk nature hunt (quiet observation)
- Mindfulness: 5-4-3-2-1 while near water
- Draw your “calm swamp spot”
Week 4: Flight & Invention
- Paper airplane contest with different designs
- Watch short Wright Brothers video for kids
- Build a cardboard glider
- Mindfulness: Heart Hug before trying something new
- Talk about trying hard things (like the Wright brothers)
Week 5: Gardens & Growing Things
- Plant seeds or herbs in cups
- Measure growth daily
- Read The Tiny Seed by Eric Carle
- Mindfulness: Water plants while doing Ocean Breath
- Nature journal: draw what you see growing
Week 6: History Heroes & First Settlements
- Simple Roanoke or Jamestown story
- Make a “time capsule” box
- Dress-up or puppet show of explorers
- Mindfulness: Color Monster bravery check-in
- Map activity: Virginia Beach to Outer Banks
Week 7: Lighthouse Keepers & Stars
- Build a paper lighthouse
- Night sky watching (or glow stars)
- Read about lighthouse life
- Mindfulness: Nature Stillness under the sky
Week 8: Marine Life & Aquariums
- Virtual or in-person aquarium visit
- Create an ocean diorama in a shoebox
- Learn 5 sea creatures and their babies
- Mindfulness: Ocean Breath with blue calm-down jar
Week 9: Trails & Forest Friends
- Easy hike at First Landing or similar
- Bug or leaf rubbing art
- Animal tracking stories
- Mindfulness: 5-4-3-2-1 on the trail
Week 10: Celebration & Reflection
- Make a Summer Memory Book
- Review favorite activities
- “Win Jar” – read all the good things
- Mindfulness: Big Heart Hug for all the growth
- Plan one special field trip
💡 Tips for Sensitive Days
- Shorten activities or skip to mindfulness
- Use noise-cancelling headphones outside
- Offer choice between 2 activities
- Always end with a calm connection moment
